Countries and regions such as California, New York, Canada, the European Union (EU), Australia, and China have begun restricting or banning single-use hotel amenities by law , reinforcing eco-friendly policies. California has officially prohibited single-use amenities in hotels with more than 50 rooms as of 2024 , while Beijing and Shanghai have implemented regulations allowing single-use amenities only upon guest request . To keep up with these changes, hotels are adopting alternatives such as refillable dispensers, eco-friendly packaging, and guest awareness campaigns to align with the global movement toward sustainability.

Hotels are no longer just about luxury—they are embracing sustainability! Transitioning to eco-friendly amenities is becoming a must-have, not just a marketing trend . The hospitality industry is implementing various solutions to minimize guest inconvenience while supporting environmental conservation:

• Refillable Dispensers – Many hotels are installing large-capacity dispensers in bathrooms, replacing single-use bottles.

• Eco-Friendly Products for Sale – More hotels are offering bamboo toothbrushes, solid shampoos, and other sustainable alternatives in lobbies or guest rooms.

• Raising Guest Awareness – Hotels are launching campaigns to encourage guests to bring their own toiletries.

South Korea has joined this movement to create a more sustainable travel culture. As of March 2024, hotels and lodging establishments in Korea are no longer allowed to provide free single-use amenities such as shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and razors . This policy aims to reduce plastic waste and encourage a more sustainable consumption culture.

Since hotels in Korea no longer provide free disposable amenities, visitors should bring their own personal care items . The following essentials are typically available for purchase at hotels, but it’s best to prepare in advance:

• Toothbrush & Toothpaste

• Razor & Shaving Cream

• Other personal skincare products

Most hotels are expected to offer refillable dispensers for shampoo, conditioner, and body wash , but policies may vary. Checking with your accommodation beforehand is recommended!

The reality of the hotel supply chain makes it challenging for small but high-quality brands to enter the amenity market without strong brand recognition. To bridge this gap, Slow Recipe has launched an initiative to standardize premium-quality products for hotel distribution . With our extensive network and sales expertise, we connect high-quality but lesser-known brands to the hotel industry, helping them reach more consumers.

For our first project, we teamed up with "107" and "Dr.Bio" to develop a set of four premium amenities : shampoo, treatment, body wash, and body lotion. 107 and Dr.Bio provide the formulations, while Slow Recipe designs the sleek, uniform packaging and labels to complete the final amenity set . This initiative led to a successful supply contract with the five-star Seogwipo KAL Hotel in Jeju , where our amenities are now in use. To enhance brand awareness, story cards introducing the products are placed in guest rooms, ensuring a seamless brand experience.

We are committed to expanding collaborations with more brands and hotels , bringing sustainable products to a broader audience!

To maintain product quality and improve future offerings, we conducted a six-month guest survey (March – September 2024) at participating hotels. A total of 216 guests responded, with an average satisfaction score of 4.1 out of 5 —a strong indication of positive reception!
